Greyhounds Australasia (GA) has agreed on the formation and objectives of a Microchip Working Committee (MCWC). The Committee has been assigned the task of assisting with national implementation of microchipping for the greyhound racing industry. The Committee will also attempt to establish national consistency and ensure that jurisdictions are prepared for the microchipping of greyhounds for all pups born after 1 January 2011.

The Committee will consider and recommend to GA a national position with regard to such matters as:

• Single ear brand (left ear/right ear, alpha numeric or a combination)
• Sourcing the preferred supplier(s) of microchips
• Methods of distribution and allocation of microchips
• Participant education
• Assessment of the racing rules (i.e. those rules relating to identification of greyhounds, race day procedures, and breeding and registration of litters)
• Determine equipment required, and training for authorised microchip implanters
• Assess computer system changes and longer term technology development

Greyhounds Australasia Chief Executive Officer, Craig Taberner said:

“Acknowledging the pending change, it is pleasing how several jurisdictions have already established local Committees to assist with the introduction of microchips.”

The Committee’s first official meeting was conducted on 31 March 2010 and it is expected that regular information on this topic will be forthcoming from GA and jurisdictions leading up to the 1 January 2011 change.
