GA Appoints New Chairman

Monday 22 March 2010

Greyhounds Australasia (GA) is pleased to advise that Mr Russell Ware has been appointed as the new Chairman of the GA Board. After completion of an exhaustive two month recruitment process it was unanimously decided by the Board that Mr Ware be offered the newly created independent Chairman’s position.

Craig Taberner, GA Chief Executive Officer, speaking on behalf of the Board highlighted some of the key qualities that Russell brings to the Board, including his strong leadership and professionalism, his attention to detail and his willingness to learn more about the greyhound racing industry. He went further to say that:

“Russell possesses over 22 years of public company board experience, holds a Master of Laws with Honours degree from the University of Sydney and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.”

“He has previously been the Chairman of a number of ASX listed companies, has been CEO of several major organisations and is currently Deputy Chairman of the Australian Egg Corporation Ltd and a Non-Executive Director of Greater Building Society Ltd”.

“The Board welcomes Russell to GA and the racing industry at large, and is sure he will make an immediate and valuable contribution”.

After announcing the appointment, Mr Ware said:

“I am both pleased and proud to take up this new position in this exciting and important industry. The move to appoint an independent Chairman of Directors, external of the control bodies of greyhound racing in Australia and New Zealand, represents an evolutionary step in the progress of the industry’s peak body.

However, I recognise that my appointment comes at a sad time for the greyhound industry world-wide with the passing of former GA Chairman, Jan Wilson AM, earlier this month. I join with my fellow Directors, the Chief Executive Officer and GA Staff in paying tribute to Jan’s considerable and long-lasting contribution to GA and the greyhound industry at large”.
