Media Release - Ethyloestrenol Use

19th September 2008

MEDIA RELEASE

ADVICE RECEIVED FROM AGVA RE: AVAILABILITY OF ETHYLOESTRENOL

Greyhounds Australasia (GA) has received advice from the Australian Greyhound Veterinary Association (AGVA) that sufficient levels of Ethyloestrenol will still be available in Australian veterinary products despite the phase out of the branded tablet “Nandoral” after the product’s current expiry date of 30 September 2008.

Advice received confirms that pharmaceutical manufacturer, Nature Vet has produced and will supply directly to veterinarians a new Ethyloestrenol tablet called “Oestrotain”.

It’s important to note that GA doesn’t endorse specific pharmaceutical products but seeks only to provide information to the industry after consultation with the AGVA.

If participants have any concerns in relation to this matter and particularly if they are contemplating the use of Ethyloestrenol, it is highly recommended that they consult their veterinarian.

The allowance of the prescribed use by oral administration of Ethyloestrenol follows direction from Greyhounds Australasia and is now adopted as a rule by all greyhound racing controlling bodies in Australia.

This rule is designed to offer trainers a veterinary alternative to prevent bitches coming into season and making them unable to race, while not unduly enhancing performance or significantly impacting on the animal’s welfare.

Please note:

GA reminds participants that Nandoral tablets, Oestrotain tablets and Nitrotain paste are brands of veterinary products that contain Ethyloestrenol. However neither the GA Board nor the various State and Territory controlling bodies have the legal right to endorse the prescription of these or other Ethyloestrenol products - that is a legal right of veterinarians.
